Students get a hands-on look at technology at Flottweg
Sparking early enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is a key priority at Realschule Vilsbiburg. As a long-standing, officially recognized STEM‑friendly school, it places great value on practical, real‑world learning. A central element of this approach is its close cooperation with the Vilsbiburg-based machine manufacturer Flottweg. This year once again, students had the opportunity to gain exciting insights into technical career paths—directly on site.

Technology up close: STEM project connects students with technical professions
As part of this year’s STEM project, around 75 sixth‑grade students visited Flottweg together with their teachers. In the company’s modern training workshop, the students were able to get hands-on experience under the guidance of Flottweg’s apprentices. They built their own small technical project—a fan—and learned fundamental skills such as measuring, drilling, filing, milling, and assembling. For many, it was the first time working with professional machines, giving them a valuable look at typical tasks found in technical apprenticeships.
Another highlight was the guided tour through Flottweg’s state-of-the-art production areas and assembly halls. There, the students experienced firsthand how the company’s high‑performance centrifuges and systems are built and used all over the world. Employees explained in an engaging way the processes, professions, and technologies behind these advanced machines.

Practical experience as a key to career orientation
“It’s important to us to show young people early on how exciting and diverse technical careers can be,” says Ulrich Häglsperger, Training Coordinator at Flottweg. “Through the STEM project, students can discover in a playful and practical way whether they enjoy working with technology. Anyone who wants to learn more is always welcome to dive deeper during an internship.”
Teachers from Realschule Vilsbiburg also emphasize the value of the collaboration:
“Hands-on experiences are incredibly motivating for young people,” says Alexandra Zehentbauer, STEM Coordinator at Realschule Vilsbiburg. “The visit to Flottweg makes technology come alive and strengthens students’ understanding of STEM subjects in a way we could never achieve through classroom teaching alone.”
With the continued annual STEM project, Realschule Vilsbiburg and Flottweg are building on their long-standing partnership. The goal is to give students early guidance, help them discover technical interests, and inspire the next generation to pursue future-proof career paths.
