IT Security and Machinery Directive

Flottweg offers secure retrofit and upgrade solution

The IT security standard DIN EN IEC 62443-2-1:2025-07, updated in July 2025, sets binding requirements for IT security in machines and plants throughout Europe. For many operators, this means: Action necessary - especially for older control systems and control cabinets. What many people don't know: IT security measures, such as those related to firewalls or remote access, can be considered "substantial changes". Under the new EU Machinery Directive (MVO), such changes cause the operator to become the official manufacturer - with the obligation to conduct CE conformity assessments, maintain documentation, and provide safety certifications.

The solution: Retrofit by Flottweg Automation Support

To avoid legal risks and at the same time increase IT security, Flottweg offers a comprehensive upgrade package for existing machines:

  • Migration advice and individual analysis
  • Modernization of control technologywith future-proof components (e.g., SIMATIC ET 200SP)
  • Integration of current standardssuch as OPC UA, Profinet or Industry 4.0 controllability, CRA-ready (Cyber resilience act)
  • Training and workshopsfor your employees
  • The update can be carried out during regular maintenance

Update of the current machine software to the Flottweg Ingo system

Technological Advantages

  • Capacitive multi-touch displays (as used in smartphones/tablets) with screen sizes ranging from 7 to 22 inches
  • High-resolution, high-contrast screens provide improved readability - even when lighting conditions are poor
  • Gloved operation and error detection – ideal for industrial environments

Software and Connectivity

SIMATIC WinCC Unified as a new visualization system in the TIA Portal:

  • Uniform user interface across all panel sizes
  • Vector-based visualization for flexible scaling
  • Web Client access: Remote control via browser without additional software
  • Open interfaces for easy integration into existing systems

Edge Technology and Expandability

Siemens Industrial Edge-enabled:

  • Panels can run apps and process data directly on the machine
  • Facilitates decentralized intelligence and faster responses

Technological Advantages of the S7-1500 / ET200SP Headline

Schaltschrank

  • Modern system architecture
  • Higher performance
  • Improved diagnostic functions
  • Efficient programming with TIA Portal
  • Compliance with current safety standards, such as IEC 62443-4-2

The S7-1500 is particularly well-positioned to meet the growing demands for IT and industrial security.

Siemens product discontinuation

Siemens has officially announced the discontinuation of the components S7-300 and ET 200M:

  • PM400 (product discontinuation):as of October 1, 2023 – no longer actively marketed
  • PM410 (type discontinuation):as of October 1, 2025 – components are only available as replacement parts

Multi-layered security strategy for remote maintenance

We offer the best defense-in-depth approach for your remote access solution. To protect your devices, network, and, above all, your industrial control systems, we have developed a controlled, hybrid, multi-layered security architecture. The development is based on ISO 27002, IEC 62443-2-4, and NIST Cyber Security Framework 1.0 standards.

Replacing old variable frequency drives makes sense for several reasons and is often economically advantageous:

Risk of failure

  • Older variable frequency drives are often used for years without any apparent issues – that is, until they suddenly fail.
  • Components such as fans, capacitors, and electronic control boards age at different rates.
  • Replacement parts are often no longer available, resulting in longer downtime.

Outdated technology and missing functions

  • Older devices do not support modern communication protocols such as Ethernet/IP or Profinet.
  • The system does not support energy monitoring or an intelligent control system.
  • Imprecise speed control can have a negative effect on the motor, power supply, and gearbox
