Flottweg Impellizer: Flexible Separation in Real Time

Continuously adjustable separation zone for maximum process stability

What is the Impellizer?

The Impellizer is an adjustable impeller integrated into Flottweg separator centrifuges. It controls the position of the separation zone inside the bowl by changing the impeller diameter for the heavy liquid phase. Unlike conventional systems, this adjustment takes place continuously during operation – without interrupting the process. This allows the separator to maintain optimal conditions even when process parameters change.

Maintaining stable separation conditions is essential for achieving consistent separation performance in industrial processes.

Designed for Products with Diverse Characteristics

In many industrial applications such as edible oil refining or biodiesel production, the composition of the feedstock is subject to natural fluctuations. These variations affect parameters such as density and phase ratios and have a direct impact on separation performance. Conventional systems often require manual adjustments or even process interruptions to maintain stable operating conditions. This leads to downtime, increased operator effort, and reduced process efficiency. The Impellizer avoids these limitations. By continuously adapting the separation zone during operation, it ensures stable performance even under changing process conditions – without interrupting production.

  • Achieve continuous adjustment without downtime
  • Consistent separation results despite fluctuating product characteristics
  • Increased process reliability and operational flexibility
  • Reduced maintenance effort and service costs

Functional Principle of the Impellizer

In the separator bowl, the separation zone defines the position at which the heavy and light phases are separated from one another. Its location has a significant impact on separation efficiency, product quality, and process stability.

The Impellizer allows for stepless adjustment of the separation zone during operation. By changing the impeller diameter of the heavy liquid phase, the internal pressure conditions in the bowl are adjusted, allowing the position of the separation boundary to be precisely shifted.

This enables immediate adaptation to product fluctuations and ensures stable operating conditions without manual intervention or standstill.

A Proven Principle Applied to Separator Technology

The Impellizer is based on the proven concept of adjustable impellers, as used in Flottweg decanter centrifuges and Tricanter® systems. It has been specially adapted for use in separator centrifuges and allows for continuous adjustment of the separation zone during operation.

By applying the proven peeling disc principle to the separator centrifuge, the operating range is expanded while ensuring a stable separation zone position even when product properties vary.
