Separate Solids and Liquids Efficiently
The Flottweg decanter - the most versatile solid bowl scroll centrifuge in mechanical separation technologyWhen solid/liquid mixtures with a high portion of solids need to be separated, decanter centrifuges are the solution of choice. In contrast to chamber filter presses, these solid shell scroll centrifuges or decanters operate continuously. High centrifugal forces separate the finely distributed solid particles from the suspension. The modular design of our decanters makes them useful in a wide variety of industries throughout the world – from Australia to Zambia. The centrifuges are adapted optimally to the specific application. Applications range from sludge dewatering to classification or wet classification to the sorting of solids. To obtain optimum results, solid bowl decanter centrifuges must be custom designed to suit specific separation processes.
Decanter Scroll
The decanter scroll conveys the solids—which have been separated from the liquid by centrifugal force and deposited on the bowl wall—toward the conical end of the bowl at a specific differential speed. This differential speed determines the residence time of the solids and influences the total dry solids. Various scroll designs allow for flexible adaptation to different products and processes.
Differential Speed
The differential speed between the decanter bowl and the screw conveyor determines the retention time and compaction of the solids, and thus the total dry solids. It can be adjusted to ensure optimal separation results for varying product characteristics.
Pond Depth
The pond depth affects the retention time of the liquid and, consequently, the length of the clarification and drying zones. By adjusting the weir plates while the system is at a standstill, this can be specifically adjusted to optimize separation performance.
Decanter Bowl
The decanter bowl separates solids using high centrifugal forces within a cylindrical-conical bowl. The length, diameter, and taper angle are customized for each application to optimize the clarifying zone and solids transport.

Flottweg Decanter Centrifuges for Best Separation Results
The efficiency of an entire process often depends entirely on the performance of the centrifuge. Every Flottweg decanter centrifuge incorporates our nearly 70 years of experience in centrifuge manufacturing and more than a thousand successful applications. The fundamental operating principle of our decanter has long proven itself. Unlike separators, which are primarily used for clarifying liquids or separating liquids—especially when dealing with very fine particles—our continuous decanters are primarily used for solid-liquid separation involving high solids content.
Centrifugal force separates the solid phase from one or two liquid phases. This occurs at a force equivalent to a thousand times Earth’s gravitational pull. Because the sediment (solid phase) has a higher density, it accumulates on the wall of the bowl. The screw conveyor continuously transports the solids to the discharge. The liquid phase(s) flows off along the scroll.
