80 Years of Opportunity: Daniel Wimmer on Apprenticeships, Development, and the Future

Our apprenticeship program is about more than teaching technical skills. It opens doors and creates opportunities. Many of our employees started their careers at Flottweg as apprentices, and that's something we're especially proud of.Daniel Wimmer Head of Training at Flottweg SE
From the shop floor to Head of Training: Daniel Wimmer exemplifies what has defined Flottweg for the past 80 years—developing young talent and creating long-term career opportunities.
Today, he is responsible for training the next generation and supporting young people as they begin their professional careers. His own career journey highlights the opportunities Flottweg offers and illustrates why so many employees choose to build long-term careers with the company. In this interview, Daniel Wimmer talks about his career journey, the evolution of apprenticeship training, and the values that have remained just as important after 80 years.
Tell us about your career journey at Flottweg.
My career at Flottweg began in manufacturing. After completing my apprenticeship as an Industrial Mechanic, I joined Flottweg in 2007 as a machine operator. Over the next nine years, I worked on various production machines while completing further education alongside my job. I then transitioned into apprenticeship training and spent two years working as a technical trainer. Since 2018, I have been responsible for the apprenticeship training program at Flottweg and have had the opportunity to support young people as they start their professional careers.
What has changed since you completed your own apprenticeship?
The biggest changes are digitalization and technological advancement. The opportunities available to apprentices today, particularly in digital areas, are hardly comparable to what was available during my apprenticeship about 20 years ago. Collaboration has also changed. Today, apprentices and trainers work together much more as partners. Open communication and mutual support have become increasingly important. Personal interaction and supporting one another have become significantly more important.
In your opinion, what should remain unchanged, even 80 years from now?
Personal interaction, mutual appreciation, and enjoyment of one’s profession are timeless values. It is also important to remain curious, to approach your work with interest and enthusiasm, and to build a strong foundation for your professional development. Those qualities will remain essential in the future as well.
What do you appreciate most about Flottweg's apprenticeship program?
What I appreciate most is the personal and individual support we provide to our apprentices. During their training, they get to know the company from A to Z and gain insight into many different areas. As a result, they have a wide range of opportunities available to them after completing their apprenticeship. Everyone has the chance to find their own path at Flottweg.
Describe apprenticeship training at Flottweg in three words.
